The apprentice has returned to our screens in both the UK and Ireland and the immediate consensus of both Lord Sugar and Bill Cullen is that although their candidates look good on paper, their experience and accolades in actuality don’t stand for much unless they can prove themselves.
They are being put through their paces and the weaker candidates are being removed one by one. Although the process takes weeks which for many businesses would be unviable the whole practice may be something which could be adapted and incorporated in to their recruitment processes all be it on a lesser scale and within a more timely period.
If it could be done and on a lesser scale incorporated into the employee vetting process it could be extremely beneficial not just in terms of ensuring that we hire the right people but also to provide employers with a much better understanding of their employees, their skills, their approach to work and their colleagues, and to test whether or not what they on paper really rings true.
As Lord Sugar put it in the boardroom, “I’ve read all your CVs,” thundered the peeved peer in his boardroom, “and on paper you all look very good. But then again, so do fish and chips.”
The opposite should also be considered; just because a person doesn’t have a lot to communicate on paper doesn’t necessarily mean that they should be disregarded for positions that have opened up. Obviously this may be difficult to overcome when hiring new employees as there has to be some filtering process but it should most definitely be considered when seeking to hire internally, or even when appointing new or additional responsibilities to existing employees.
Think outside the box when it comes to recruitment. Like everything else in today’s market businesses need to seek to improve the way they manage all their business processes.
In order to approach recruitment in this way it may require businesses to free up time in other areas in order to ensure that they can hire the best people possible and get the most from their existing employees.
